Employee Retention

When asked what the main reason is that people quit their jobs many think that remuneration is the key reason. While it certainly is important to be paid a fair wage it is actually quite far down the list.

Lack of opportunity to learn and grow in an organization is usually the number one in surveys. The ability to keep current in a job or industry provides stability for the employee and they will not have to change employers to gain on-the-job experience. While it is up to the individual to take advantage of training opportunities that exist in the community it is not useful if the employee is not given the opportunity to gain or use the skills.

This is followed closely by lack of recognition. Many employers do not realize the power of a simple thank you for someone who has gone above and beyond. It doesn’t have to be a major production and sometimes the employee doesn’t want it to be.

Knowledge of personality type is extremely useful in understanding what is important to the individual and how to respond to them in the best way to engage and retain employees.
