Whether your strategic team or board is new, been together for a while, or has added a new member, there are certainties about that team.
They may have been brought together purposely because of differing education, training, and experiences, but more than likely position or interest was the catalyst. In any case, everyone will have different backgrounds, education, training, and unique life experiences that they will bring to the table, enriching the team. As well, they will bring their individual personality preferences.
If these preferences are not understood by the team, discussions may appear as conflict and provoke reaction rather than healthy discussion. Challenges the board or team may encounter are;
- Differences in level of preparedness by members
- Some wanting too much information, other making decisions on seemingly little information
- No order to the discussion, seems all over the map
- Some wanting no change in status quo, others wanting extensive change
- Some talking over each other, others quiet and not contributing
All of these, and more, are related to personality preferences. By understanding and working with these preferences there is an opportunity to prepare more effectively for the meetings and encourage positive participation in the decision making process.
