We lead our day-to-day lives, busy, nose to the grindstone, trying to keep the business going whether we are an employee or owner. Sometimes we are too close, don’t see the changes going on around us.
There is huge importance in keeping up to date, both in your business and in the community where you do business. Memberships in organizations such as Chambers of Commerce, BC Human Resource Management Association, Vancouver Island Economic Alliance, Service Clubs, and Business Networking Groups can be extremely valuable
Attending events such as the Economic Summit, put on by the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance give us direction on the future economy of Vancouver Island, where we live. The BC Human Resource Management Association has a conference each year as well as webinars to keep you up to date on legislation and best practices. There may be others which are linked to your particular occupation.
Social media now plays a major role in keeping us informed of happenings both in the community and around the world. We can be tuned in and participate with Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and others giving us instantaneous information.
The downside to all of this is it is easy to get pulled into doing it all. You need to decide the most effective use of your time and resources. You need to keep well enough informed to be able to be proactive with changes in your business or occupation realizing that doing so is not your business or occupation.
“Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there” Mark Twain
